Sustainable Tourism on Lanzarote - Opportunity & Challenge
We live in a paradise with a deep attraction of nature. We are surrounded by the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. Our island is covered with lava rocks, a unique fauna and our beloved palm tree, the "Phoenix Canariensis", which plays an important role especially in Haria.
We, who live here, have decided to introduce ourselves to the great public in order to communicate that we love and want to protect our land. With this basic idea we can present the beauty of Haria to our visitors with respect - curiosity - a lot of information and understanding and at the same time open a door for the international cultural exchange which is important for us.
We don't want big hotels here in Haria. But we are in favour of the HOTEL HARIA, i.e. the renting of restored individual houses. We want to grow in symbiosis with the visitors and thus ensure the possibility of a regular income for the inhabitants of Haria.
The Unesco programme "Man and Biosphere" and César Manrique's basic idea of tourism are the basis for us.

Lanzarote becomes UNESCO Global Geopark (2015)
Another step for the protection of Lanzarote and sustainable tourism
The island of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago have been selected to become a UNESCO Global Geopark. There are currently only 140 geoparks in 38 countries worldwide that are allowed to carry this distinction.
This distinction applies to the entire island of Lanzarote as well as the islets of La Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Alegranza, which form the Chinijo Archipelago, and the abrasion platform that surrounds them, and is due to their volcanic nature. In total, there are 2,500 square kilometres, of which 866 square kilometres of land have emerged.
Unesco has noted that Lanzarote and Chinijo are almost entirely basalt. In this context, it recalled that during the eruption of Timanfaya between 1730 and 1736, "the union of numerous volcanic structures along a very long fissure led to the formation of the largest lava fields in the world".

Synopsis
At the end of the 60s, the artist César Manrique returned to Lanzarote to transform the island into an ideal holidays place, where art and nature played an important role and the peculiarities of the island should be preserved. Fifteen years after his death, thousands of tourists visit the island in search of the sun and beach. However, the island keeps a living conscience, and the heavy living together between tradition and progress shows us the tracks of the world with expiry date.
